All energy work is based on the premise that the healthy functioning of the human body-mind is dependent upon a balanced and unobstructed flow of bioenergy.

That bioenergy is variously referred to by such terms as "chi" "qi" "ki" or "prana", among others. This bioenergy moves along major pathways in the body known as "meridians".

The places where these pathways intersect and form centers of energy are called "chakras". Where only a few pathways (or lines of force) intersect a minor chakra is formed. But where great streams of energy meet and cross, a major chakra is formed. There are seven such major chakras: crown, brow, throat, heart, solar plexus, sacral and basic. These chakras function much like pumps or valves regulating the flow of the energy system, which in turn affects the functioning of the body-mind. The various forms of energy work attempt to assist the person toward healthy functioning of the body-mind through stimulation and abstraction of the chakras.
